Supervisor 101
  • Organizations select supervisors usually one of three ways:
    • The individual is an above average worker and therefore, must be a candidate for promotion
    • The individual aspires to be a supervisor as part of a career path
    • The individual is asked to fill in for an indefinite period of time and no one relieves them!
  • Regardless of how someone becomes a supervisor, each will face the shocking reality that few organizations prepare and train anyone to assume this responsibility.  What makes for a great painter, teacher or engineer rarely makes for a great supervisor of these individuals.  Supervision requires a unique skills set that must be developed beyond the skills necessary to do the job or function being supervised.

In this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Discuss the communication skills required of an effective supervisor.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor in linking the organization's needs to the skills, talents and motivations of the supervised employee.
  • Complete and discuss the Supervisory Skills Inventory to determine their current supervisory strengths and areas requiring improvement.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of supervisory skills by discussing various industry case scenarios and what the appropriate supervisory response should be.
  • Understand the supervisory responsibility and skills necessary to create a 'learning workforce' focused on Human Performance Improvement principles and techniques for challenging unproductive and unsafe work place habits and underlying 'at risk' attitudes.
  • Learn how to develop effective assertiveness skills in dealing with difficult people (employees, managers and customers.)
